Steele Creek Recycling Center Under Construction on John Price Road

The Steele Creek Recycling Center & Transfer Station is under construction at 9851 John Price Road in southwest Charlotte. Mecklenburg County is developing the project, designed by FMK Architects with SCS Engineers also involved. A grand opening is expected in early 2028.

J. Kokolakis Contracting, Inc. holds the $44 million construction contract. The project includes a Solid Waste Transfer Station Building, Materials Processing Building, Storage Building, and Scale House with weigh scales. Construction is expected to take around 22 months, with a grand opening planned for early 2028.

The 10.54-acre site was rezoned from I-1 to I-2(CD) under petition 2022-088, approved by Charlotte City Council on November 21, 2022. Access will be from John Price Road only.

The facility will accept recycling, household trash, household hazardous waste, bulky waste, construction waste, and yard waste. Mulch and compost will be sold on-site. Hours will run Monday through Saturday.
