Umbrella Center Under Construction on Albemarle Road

The Umbrella Center, a three-story, 85,220-square-foot office and services facility, is under construction at 4822 Albemarle Road. Mecklenburg County is developing the project, designed by Jenkins Peer Architects. A building permit valued at $22.9 million has been issued, and vertical construction is underway with Howard Brothers Electric of Charlotte LLC among the contractors on site.

The project renovates and expands the existing building, spanning three levels plus a basement with more than 250 parking spaces. Completion is expected in summer 2027.

The center will be the first family justice center in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area and the seventh in North Carolina. It will house 250 service providers and co-locate 15 partner agencies, including Safe Alliance, Pat's Place Child Advocacy Center, CMPD, the District Attorney's Office, and Atrium Health. Services include a medical clinic, legal aid and court services, counseling and advocacy, and housing assistance and safety planning. The center expects to serve 10,000 to 12,000 individuals annually.

The $49 million project received New Markets Tax Credit financing through Enhanced Capital.
