Firehouse 44 Breaks Ground in Charlotte's River District
Charlotte broke ground Oct. 8 on Firehouse 44, a $23.3 million mass timber fire station at 7900 Dixie River Road in the River District.

The City of Charlotte broke ground Oct. 8 on Firehouse 44 at 7900 Dixie River Road in the River District. The two-story, 14,000-square-foot station will have three apparatus bays. ADW Architects is the architect; Samet Corp. is design-builder.
The $23.3 million project will be the first mass timber firehouse in the Southeast, supporting fire and rescue operations for the growing River District.
The all-electric building includes geothermal HVAC, in-slab radiant heating, a geothermal water heater, and rooftop and ground-mounted solar panels, plus Energy Star equipment and low-flow fixtures. It is pursuing LEED Gold and ILFI Zero Carbon certification.
A temporary Firehouse 44 began service March 4 to maintain coverage during construction. Completion is expected in late 2027 or early 2028, targeting Dec. 31, 2027.
