Atrium Health Union West Breaks Ground on $116M Tower Expansion

The Atrium Health Union West Patient Tower Expansion is under construction at 1000 Healing Way in Stallings, near the Mecklenburg-Union county line. The $116 million project adds more than 67,000 square feet. Perkins&Will designed the tower; DPR Construction is building it. Work began September 10, 2026.

The expansion more than triples patient capacity with 88 new patient rooms. The emergency department gains 11 bays. The project also adds one endoscopy room, one procedure room, enhanced imaging, and ancillary and support services.

Union West opened in February 2022 and has served more than 200,000 patients. Visits are up 127 percent since opening. The tower is expected to open in fall 2028, with a reported completion date of September 30, 2028.

The hospital sits at Independence Boulevard (Highway 74) and Stallings Road, the primary corridor linking Stallings and Matthews to southeast Charlotte.
