Austin Approves Downtown Street Overhaul
Austin adopts a long-term plan to redesign streets in its downtown core.
Austin City Council adopted the Austin Core Transportation Plan on March 26, 2026, a long-term mobility plan for the downtown core between MLK Blvd, Lamar Blvd, Lady Bird Lake and I-35.
The plan calls for street redesigns, including one-way to two-way conversions and new bike and bus lanes, at an estimated cost of $835 million to $1.13 billion.
The focus is on upgrading urban infrastructure in a key district.
Correction, Oct. 22, 2026: An earlier version of this story described the plan as a mixed-use development with residential and commercial space, due for completion in December 2042. It is a downtown transportation plan, and no completion date could be confirmed.
