Duracell Opens Global R&D Center at Science Square Labs

Duracell has completed its Global Innovation Center for Research and Development at 101 Nerem St. NW in Atlanta's Science Square district. The facility spans 83,000 square feet across four floors of the 13-story Science Square Labs tower, developed by Trammell Crow Company with Perkins&Will as architect. A ribbon-cutting was held October 6.

Duracell invested approximately $56 million in the facility, which houses global R&D operations relocated from Bethel, Connecticut. The project will create 110 to 120 jobs. Employees moved in August 10; Duracell initially leased 59,000 square feet on two floors before expanding.

The space includes labs and clean rooms, collaboration and gathering areas, a café, a fitness center, retail space, outdoor amenities, and biophilic design elements. The fit-out team included Perkins&Will, AHA Consulting Engineers, Walter P Moore, and Brasfield & Gorrie. The project targets LEED Gold and WELL Gold certification.

Science Square Labs, a roughly 364,000-square-foot building completed in April 2024, anchors the 18-acre Science Square district, planned for approximately 1.8 million square feet of lab and office space, 500 residences, and 25,000 square feet of retail. Duracell, a Berkshire Hathaway company, also operates a manufacturing plant in LaGrange and a distribution center in Fairburn.
