American Tower Proposes 4 MW Edge Data Center in East Charlotte
American Tower's proposed 40,000-square-foot edge data center at 8036 Hood Road remains frozen under Charlotte's data center moratorium, with an extension vote set for Oct. 26.

American Tower Corporation has proposed a 40,000-square-foot data center at 8036 Hood Road in east Charlotte. Filed as Rezoning Petition 2025-120 by American Tower Asset Sub LLC, the project is planned as a roughly 4 MW edge facility, about 2 percent the size and power of a hyperscale data center.

The 58-acre site would see about 10 acres developed. Duke Energy Carolinas would serve the facility. If approved, it could open by mid-2028, targeting June 30, 2028.

The petition sparked Charlotte's citywide data center moratorium debate. The petitioner deferred its rezoning hearing earlier this year, then Council voted 11-0 on June 8, 2026 to adopt a 150-day moratorium, freezing the petition until at least Nov. 5, 2026. Council held a public hearing Oct. 12 ahead of an Oct. 26 vote on extending the moratorium by up to 11 months. An opposition petition has gathered nearly 5,000 signatures.
The proposal is the first data center tracked in the Reedy Creek area. It cannot advance until the freeze lifts or Council acts on the extension.
