Fulton County has finalized its acquisition of the Atlanta City Detention Center at 254 Peachtree Street SW, transferring the 11-story, 471,000-square-foot facility from the City of Atlanta to the county.

The building has long served as the city's jail, housing detainees awaiting court appearances and those serving short sentences. It sits near the Fulton County Government Center and Atlanta City Hall in the downtown government district.

The sale follows years of negotiation over the facility's future. Atlanta had explored closing the jail and repurposing the site, while Fulton County faces persistent overcrowding at its own facilities. The acquisition gives the county control of a major detention property downtown.

The site sits along the Peachtree Street corridor, within walking distance of the Five Points MARTA station and several blocks north of Garnett station.
